Willie Walsh , Chief Executive of BA and IAG is to take over the oneworld Chairman position.
American Airlines Tom Horton steps down after holding the position since December 2011. oneworld will be undergoing one of its biggest expansions to date with three airlines joining; TAM Airlines and US Airways will join on 31st March and SriLankan Airlines will join on the 1st May.
oneworld currently comprises airberlin, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian and S7 Airlines, together with more than 30 of their affiliated carriers. A big lot to take on!
oneworld chief executive, Bruce Ashby, said: ‘We thank Tom Horton sincerely for his leadership of oneworld during a period of unprecedented growth for the alliance and at a time when his own American Airlines has been undergoing its merger with US Airways.
With Walsh’s professional history, it looks like he’s a good man for the job, described as a man with “vision and determination.”
