How far in advance should you book flights?

Most people think the further in advance, the cheaper the flight will be. Kayak have done their research and found that is not necessarily true…

Flight fares vary, for example, the average fare for a flight from the US to Europe will vary by $256 from when a ticket is first offered to the day of the flight. A flight from the US to South America will fluctuate over $262 in the same period.

Here’s the figures as laid out by Quartz.

And so disparaging the theory of ‘sooner the better.’ One thing we all knew is that flight prices typically jump up in the week of departure. Fares from the US to Europe rise by 15% in the week before, however, tickets to Europe from the US are almost always cheaper than a ticket to Asia or Africa no matter the timing.
