Carsten Spohr is to be Lufthansa‘s new chief executive, succeeding Christoph Franz in May this year.
Spohr is the head of the passenger airline division at Lufthansa and had been widely tipped as the next CEO. Christoph Franz announced that he would be leaving to become Chairman at Swiss pharmaceuticals company, Roche in September last year.
Spohr faces many challenges as the new CEO including completing the airlines’ restructuring process, boosting profitability and fighting off intense competition. Lufthansa is in the middle of a cost-savings programme which aims to improve the group’s competitiveness.
However, Mr Spohr said, in a statement released by the airline, that “the company is on the right track.”
The decision for his replacement will be made at the end of April.
