Scoot Airlines actually offers "child-free zones" on its aircraft to make the flying experience more pleasurable. To be in an area with no children under age 12, passengers will have to pay a fee of $14. But are you actually willing to pay that additional fee to not sit by a wailing infant? I think I would. What if you had to decide between sitting next to a screaming kid or a smelly person? I would sit next to the kid.

A recent Harris Interactive poll surveyed 2,276 adults in the United States. With regards to this survey, 63% of passengers would rather be seated next to a crying baby than a smelly adult.

Here are nine other interesting facts from the survey:

  • 58% of passengers would be willing to pay more for legroom on a longer flight.
  • 55% of passengers would rather have free WiFi than free TV/movies.
  • 53% of passengers would pay extra to not sit in a middle seat on flights longer than 3 hours.
  • 50% of passengers would like to use their mobile phones on flights. (Getting there!)
  • 46% of passengers would prefer to sit in an area with no reclining chairs.
  • 39% of passengers would rather let the stranger next to them sleep on their shoulders than pay for carry-ons.
  • 37% of passengers would pay more to fly on newer aircraft.
  • 33% would be willing to pay more for more legroom on a shorter flight.
  • 27% of passengers would pay more for baggage than fly without in-flight entertainment.

I do not find these results surprising. We have all heard about the reclining chair issues, and how hard it is to get out from a middle seat. Then, there is always to debate about having more legroom. All those extra ancillary fees. And of course, the demand for in-flight electronic device usage.

What do you think about the results of this survey? Does it apply to you? Let us know!
